About JuLi Ra I took a round-a-bout route to jewelry making, after having spent many years in the financial arena as banker, trust representative, business management and personal financial consultant, stock and credit analyst, trader and compliance officerâ?¦ The events of 9/11 was the catalyst to change my life in a dramatic way and to try something I had never thought of pursuing as a career. Prior to getting involved with jewelry making, I had no experience in beading, metal work, knitting or crocheting. I decided to try something new so I took a few metal smithing classes at the Craft Studentâ??s League in Manhattan and I was hooked. My foray into fiber techniques with metal: knitting crocheting, weaving, braiding and coiling came about because I read a quote in a book by the renown metal/fiber artist Arline Fisch who said, â??anything you can do with yarn and thread, you can do with wireâ??â?¦ so I tried. My work has been evolving; from simple wire forms to knitting and crocheting and back to simple metal work. My love for wire, metal, pearls and beads continue as evidenced by my myriad of drawers and shelves full of this obsession. People often ask how I made such a significant change in my lifestyle and I tell them that I didnâ??t know that I couldnâ??t do it. If you had told me 10 years ago that today, Iâ??d be at home in my studio creating beautiful pieces of wearable art while watching my children grow up, Iâ??d have thought you were talking about someone else. I feel blessed and truly grateful that I can do what I enjoy doing and making people happy with my creations.
